Sharing a sampling of images taken for creative exploration (4) and images documenting travel (4).
In the first three images I was working to distort/abstract the location, in the fourth image I was working to create a narrative image of the market.
The last four images represent how I often shoot when I travel attempting to capture the overwhelming expanse of locations through a wide angle with a foreground that provides scale and accessibility for the viewer.

Form as substrate

I am endlessly fascinated with form expressed through matter.  In these photos, shapes and patterns are expressed in a building, a bridge and a arched cloister.

Here are some examples of my photography.  The newborn photos were all taken in the hospital room.  

 These two photos of the World War II monument were taken a few years apart. The color one is one of my favorites. I wanted a clean canvas - no people, just the view of the Lincoln Memorial from the WW II Memorial. However, there was a group of students going to prom who were not leaving. I waited a long time for them to move on but when the girl in red dress joined the group she stood out in the sea of black that I couldn't resist taking the shot. I also had my white balance set to Tungsten to purposefully get a violet-blue cast. That was done on  camera. I didn't think a warmer palette suited the group.

This second photo of World War II Memorial was taken last week. I went for a high contrast black & white look inspired by film noir. 

Recently I was on a street photography photo-walk. This is my favorite from the day. 

This sunflower is from 2008 or so. Flowers aren't really my thing but this photo always makes me happy. I love the warm, full, bright yet deep yellow. It's one of my favorite photos because it was the first where I felt fully in control of my camera. It was in manual and everything came out the way I wanted. 

I'm hosting my first photography meetup.com this afternoon March 15th at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria.  I've got 5 ladies joining me - we'll see how it goes.  If it's a success I'll see about organizing another one that combines an invite out to this group too.  Baby steps to success.

Vivian Maier documentary

I had the chance to watch the Vivian Maier documentary this weekend.  It is just amazing the number of pictures she took. It is an interesting story.
I believe it is available for free on-demand if you have showtime. I noticed it is available for rent on Amazon and Apple TV. I hope you like it.

Storytelling.  If there is a thread that runs through my pictures, storytelling stands out as a big part of what I do.  This class has helped me to become more clear about that.  Here's a series from last Thursday, Friday and Saturday that I call "3 Days in February".  I had no intention of doing any photography but grabbed my point/shoot as I walked out the door just in case.  Thursday and Friday were in NYC and Saturday was at a jazz concert here in this building.
